WANTED: KNIGHTS AND PRINCESSES AT STOKESAY CASTLE!
Sunday 29 & Bank Holiday Monday 30 May 2011
Bravery, gallantry and a fearless disposition: three of the qualities being sought by the medieval mentors at Stokesay Castle over the Whitsun Holiday Sunday and Monday, when the fortified manor house welcomes a duo of 15th century Time Travellers!
As though they had stepped straight out of the 1400s, a medieval knight and lady will be rolling out the red carpet for young visitors to Stokesay Castle, near Ludlow, as they put children through their paces learning the basics of medieval foot combat, and the courtly etiquette that would separate a noble lady from the peasants!
From 11.00am on 29 & 30 May, the trainee knights can try their hand at combat activities including junior jousting and swordplay, and hear exciting tales about gallant knights and their daring exploits in tournament and on the battlefield! For those who seek a more pampered life of privilege, there will be lessons in medieval deportment and custom so that children never make a wrong move when in the presence of the 15th century nobility!
“Over the two days, we’ll have a range of child-sized armour for our younger visitors to try on, and get a feel for just how heavy and cumbersome this could be, but if children have their own dressing up outfits – either knights or princesses – they are welcome to come dressed ready for combat!” says English Heritage’s regional events manager, Karen Pike. “We’ve also got some fantastic costumes and accessories in our shop to suit every budding knight or princess of the realm, from wooden swords and our best-selling bows and arrows, to ‘hennins’, the proper name for pointy princess hats!”
Time Travellers Go… Knights & Princesses runs from 11.00am to 5.00pm each day, with the castle open an hour earlier at 10.00am. Admission prices are £5.80 for adults, £5.20 for concessions and £3.50 for children or £15.10 for a family tickets (two adults and up to three children). An additional £1 will be charged on standard admission for every child (member and non member) for the Time Travellers activity.
