Shrewsbury's Carols in the Square
Shrewsbury Town Council will be joining up with Shropshire Council to host this year’s Carols in the Square.
The councils are jointly funding the event, on December 15, which attracts thousands of people every year.
Carols in the Square will start at 5.30pm with music for all the family. Then, at 6pm, Eric Smith from BBC Radio Shropshire will be broadcasting live from the Square.
Helen Ball, Town Clerk said: “Responsibility for the Christmas carols event always used to lie with the former borough council so we are delighted to be re-establishing a local link to this enormously popular event. We are sure, with our partners at Shropshire Council, we can make this the biggest and best ever Carols in the Square!”
Shropshire Councillor Steve Charmley, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said: “This has always been a special event in Shrewsbury’s calendar and we plan to start the Christmas season in style. There will even be song sheets for people whose carols are a bit rusty, so everyone can join in.”
Local Shropshire Council Member, Dr Maxwell Winchester added: “Carols in the Square is a great opportunity for getting together for an informal sing-along, accompanied by fine musicians and refreshments to keep the chill out. This is a very popular festive event in a beautiful setting, so please come and join in the festivities.”
Destination Shrewsbury, a new partnership group aimed at promoting Shrewsbury as a prime location to live, work, visit and invest in is also backing the event.
Destination Shrewsbury brings together the public, private, voluntary and community sectors including: Shrewsbury Town Council Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Business Chamber, Tourism Association and Shop in the Loop.
The group is also behind plans for the Christmas choirs’ event being held on November 24, to coincide with the first evening of late night shopping in the town.
Choirs from across Shrewsbury are being invited to perform at various venues across the town including St Mary’s and St Alkmund’s churchyards, at the top of Mardol, and The Square, between 6pm and 9pm.
The Christmas lights will also be illuminated from this date.
Choirs wanting to sign up for the event must be based in the Shrewsbury area and performance slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
