Santa Visits RAF Cosford's Wartime Grotto
Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December will be a time to celebrate Christmas during the Second World War as part of a Wartime Christmas Weekend packed wtih activities for all the family.
A weekend full of festive activities brings to life the experiences of the 1940s family; getting you in the festive mood.
Santa will be in his wartime Grotto, where he will be dropping off some early Christmas gifts for children at only £2.50 per child, sessions from 1100–1230 and 1400–1600. Children, make sure that Santa knows what you want for Christmas by posting a letter to him in a special post-box. Each child who writes to Santa will receive a reply from him before Christmas.
The Museum will be opening up its Wartime Classroom to the public providing families with the rare opportunity to enjoy a 1940’s class sitting at old wooden school desks. Children and adults alike will make their own gas mask case and write with a dip pen using old fashioned inkwells. Parents can test their mathematical agility by helping their children do pounds, shilling and pence arithmetic and can also assist with the filling in of a replica evacuee label and identity card. Learn all about how families improvised with food during the war due to rationing. But please be aware that we may have to evacuate the class quickly at any time in an orderly fashion and make it down to the Anderson Shelter to escape a day time bombing raid.
Wartime crafts will also be a must for children - try your hand at making traditional Christmas decorations as they would have in the war years including paper chains and lanterns, decorate a ceramic bauble to hang on your tree or design and make your very own calendar, a perfect gift for moms and dads (charges may apply). There will also be a talk on Christmas presents past and present and a small craft fayre for those important gifts, ideal for that fastidious family member.
The RAF Cosford band will entering the spirit of Christmas with a one hour performance of some favorite Christmas carols and well know wartime songs. The RAF Band will be performing in the Visitor Centre on Sunday 12th December.
Bring your cameras along and take photos of the family dressed up in authentic wartime RAF uniforms and wartime clothing. Solve the clues to our Wartime Christmas Quiz to be in with the chance of winning an early Christmas present of a £15 voucher for the Museum shop.
All the fun will be taking place in the Museums Visitor Centre. So whether you’re visiting Santa or taking part in the 1940’s lesson, this weekend is sure to keep the whole family entertained.
